Hui! There's nothing better than learning in the environment where you stay (reside). For me, that's Maui no ka oi! For you, it may be O'ahu, learning survival skills from those who live them—such as (Kahuna) indigenous practitioners or long-term wilderness residents—is often superior because they provide field-tested realism and contextual wisdom that a classroom or textbook cannot replicate. So talk story with those from the area who can give you the layout of the land. What natural disasters looked like for a particular area of the island, and the resources that were needed.

🌺 1. Cultural & land-based skills resources.
  • Kualoa Ranch on Oahu educates visitors about traditional Hawaiian land use, farming practices, and resource awareness.

  • Hui Kū Maoli Ola (Oahu) offers insights into identifying plants that are edible, medicinal, or hazardous, which is essential for survival on the island.

  • Maui Cultural Lands (Maui) emphasizes traditional Hawaiian practices, such as land navigation and resource utilization.

  • Hawaii Nature Center (Maui): Discover native birds and plants for conservation purposes and possible survival requirements.

  • Maui Nui Botanical Gardens, learn about the native plants and what they were used for.

  • Bishop Museum's plants of Hawaii

  • University of Hawaii's Hawaiian Ecosystems and Culture

  • ***For vendors, if you have a class that would be a survival skill or knowledge and would like your information posted, please contact us! If you have a Hawaii survival skills class please let me know.

👉 Knowledge is valuable

  • You discover what truly thrives here

  • You comprehend how Hawaiians lived sustainably

  • You steer clear of risky trial-and-error

  • Here's a list from the University of Hawaii about Hawaii's Ingenious Crops. See the list go out and see where it is, what it looks like, and how to identify it.

🌊 2. Ocean survival (non-negotiable in Hawaii)

Mastering water skills is essential for survival on an island.

  • Hawaii Lifeguard Association

  • American Red Cross (local Hawaii chapters)

Learn:

  • Rip current survival

  • Ocean navigation basics

  • Water rescue & flotation improvisation

👉 👉 Knowledge is priceless. In Hawaii, the ocean is both a resource and a threat.

🌴 3. Formal survival schools (best structured training)

These give you solid fundamentals that can help you prepare and become more knowledgeable about preparedness for Hawaii!

You’ll learn:

  • Fire in wet conditions

  • Shelter building

  • Water purification

  • Tool use

👉 Then you adapt those skills to tropical conditions.

📺 4. Learn from credible survival experts (free)

Use this to build knowledge before practicing.

  • Les Stroud – realistic, no gimmicks

  • Cody Lundin – primitive skills focus

  • Alone – shows what actually works under pressure (Cold weather climates)

👉 Watch critically:

Pay attention to decision-making, not just gear

Conclusion

To live is to 'Ofa (Love) it up! Be safe, be aware, and be prepared for yourself and your family!
